Painting Classes & Workshops

All skill levels from beginning to advanced are welcome and will benefit from individualized instruction. Each session starts with a painting demonstration from life. Students are given individual critiques and help solving their painting problems. Instruction covers all aspects of realistic painting  including:

            1.   A recommended color palette to give the student the most control in color mixing                           and  color schemes.

             2.  Determining and mixing color effectively.

             3.  Representing a 3-dimensional object on a flat surface (canvas) using color value.

             4.  Different types of edges and their use and importance in a painting.

             5.  The importance of the “big shape”.

             6.  Creating a painting from beginning to end using classical composition and design                            techniques.

Students may work in soft pastel or gouache if they desireplease email me before enrolling. Students will receive an oil painting supplies list after enrolling. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. In addition, please visit my website to view images of my work.

Group Class Sessions:  Classes are held in my spacious studio. The maximum number of students in a class is 5, in order to allow plenty of time for individualized instruction and a painting demonstration. Each class session runs for either 4 to 8 consecutive weeks for 3 hours a week, depending on student preference.  Classes are presently held on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The fee for an entire 8-week session, with 24 hours of instruction, is $360.  The fee for a 4-week class, with 12 hours of instruction, is $180.  Fees are payable in advance and non-refundable.  However, any missed class sessions can be made up at another class.

All portrait workshops use a live model and will have model fees added on to the session fee.  Students will be notified of the additional charge before or upon registration.

Painting Workshops:

A week-long  workshop is being planned for summer 2019 at my Maine studio--probably in late June or early July. The workshop is an intensive version of my 10-week classes and includes individualized instruction and daily painting demonstrations. Plein-air painting sessions may be included depending on student interest and the weather. Please contact me if you are interested in a workshop.

Evening Classes:  These may be available on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Please contact me if you are interested in evening classes.

Private Instruction & Critiques:  In addition, I offer private instruction and private critiques. Please contact me for more information.
